DBC Presentations in Anchorage

Offer three workshops on the importance of language acquisition for deaf infants and young deaf children.
On February 4, 5, & 6th, 2010, Tami Hossler and John Egbert with the Deaf Bilingual Coalition (DBC) will provide presentations on the importance of language acquisition for deaf infants and young deaf children through American Sign Language (ASL). Because of the “power” of their presentations, three workshops will be offered. Sign language interpreters will be present. If you are interested in attending please confirm by sending an email to josharmira@gmail.com and identify which session you will attend. DBC ( www.dbcusa.org ) is a community of deaf and hearing people whose goals are to promote language acquisition, social justice, and quality education through the awareness of ASL and its excellence in cultivating the critical intellect of deaf infants and young deaf children. The Deaf Bilingual Coalition works to inform parents of deaf children, guardians, teachers of the deaf, doctors, audiologists, government officials, businesses, and other organizations on the importance of ASL in early language acquisition for all deaf infants and young deaf children.
Tami Hossler, Fort Myers, Florida
Tami is a hearing parent of a daughter who is Deaf and is 24 years old. Her daughter is a graduate of the Indiana School for the Deaf, a bilingual school, and a graduate from Gallaudet University and a soon to be graduate student. Mrs. Hossler is currently a Board member of the Deaf Bilingual Coalition and serve as the Outreach Coordinator. She is a Board member of the American Society for Deaf Children and the editor of ASDC’s national magazine, The Endeavor. www.deafchildren.org. She has served as a parent advocate for 24 years in many roles some of those being; Vice President and Secretary of the Indiana School for the Deaf Parent Teacher Counselor Organization. She has served on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Legislative Committee in the State of Indiana which passed a bill to recognize ASL as a language and allowed it to be taught for college and high school credit.
John Egbert, Minneapolis, Minnesota
John is a Deaf parent of two Deaf children, Clyde, 37 and Stella, 34. Both work at Texas School for the Deaf. Clyde is a technology technician and Stella is an elementary principal. Both attended Gallaudet University, Stella majored in English and has a master degree from George Mason University. John is the founder of Deaf Bilingual Coalition and is also a Board member of the American Society for Deaf Children. John has served as a parent advocate and gives presentations and motivational speeches across the country. John is the author of a book called MindField.
