A Letter from Alyeska Vocational Services

Posted on June 29, 2009

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Thank you for your continued support of Alyeska Vocational Services. We are a small, young organization for Alaska, but our roots are very old (if 30 is old) with our parent organization Washington Vocational Services. Since we've opened our doors in December of 2005 we have enjoyed assisting persons with disabilities find employment in Anchorage and the Matsu Valley. We have been blessed with wonderful employees who have a strong commitment to their community.

One such employee Keri Ornellas has been a tremendous support and advocate with our organization. We have mixed emotions in sending this email, as we are announcing her departure from our agency. Keri is amazing and we have benefited with her employ. We also are excited to announce that Holli Yancey will be Keri's replacement assisting us to continue to move our organization and vision forward, that "All people will be seen for their abilities".

Following is a note from Keri, we will miss her.

Best to you and if I haven't met you yet, I'm looking forward to that day!

Cheers,

Lynn Van Vactor
Executive Director Alyeska Vocational Services

Hi All!

I am writing today to inform you all that I have submitted my letter of resignation to Washington/Alyeska Vocational Services. While I truly believe in the mission and dedication of the entire staff at Washington/Alyeska Vocational Services, I have decided that management is just not for me. As luck would have it, I have accepted the opportunity to return to the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation as their ASL Interpreter, continuing to provide services in our community! Of course, there will be a soft place in my heart for Washington/Alyeska Vocational Services as they continue to set and accomplish the many goals to fulfill the needs of our community, but I look forward to supporting the great work of the State of Alaska's Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.

I would also like to take this opportunity to announce and welcome Holli Yancey to Washington/Alyeska Vocational Services!! She has graciously accepted the position to become their new Program Manager in Alaska!!! Many of you may already be familiar with her through her work with ATLA. Holli brings with her many years of experience in the disability community specializing in Deaf and Hard of Hearing services and business skills to boot. She is full of enthusiasm for people with disabilities and the management of AVS! I wish her and Washington/Alyeska Vocational Services all the best and continued success in their future endeavors!!

Thank you for the opportunity to serve our community through two of the finest agencies!!

Yours Sincerely,

Keri Ornellas

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
May Take Action That Will Hurt VRS

Posted on June 18, 2009

The FCC has asked for public comment on a proposal to reduce the rate provided for VRS for 2009 – 2010; unfortunately if the FCC reneges on its promise to provide a fair, stable and predictable rate, VRS will be hurt. Based on the promise of a three-year rate, investments have been made that have improved VRS – more and better interpreters, new technology, local numbers, 911 emergency service, and more. Now the FCC is threatening to cut the third year of the rate, which will inevitably force VRS providers to cut back on VRS.
